Scope of SL and project ideas

Having read some research into games based learning at www.futurelab.org.uk I have been thinking more about exploiting the 3D virtual world of SL and also about allowing students to lead their learning too.

IDEA 1:
This was to create an online chat function in SL where learning tasks would be set up using facebook, task would take place in SL and then feedback left through facebook. This provides learners with scope to take risks but the learning task is focused and allows reflection, key parts of the ethos of support for creative learning.
However, is it student lead? does it allow enough scope for play and exploration?

IDEA 2:
Ss create a poster leading on from class based learning or some collaborative research which is displayed in SL. I like the idea of the display area where physically ss can go to see the work of other people. Also allows for flexibility in terms of time but what about feedback? Unless all ss are online at the same time discussing work this could be very isolating and lead to negative social and learner presence issues. Does this allow any scope for exploration and constructing meaning without feedback?

IDEA 3:
'Web-quest' through SL. Ss are set the task for exploring areas of SL with the aim of collecting information to report to the group. This could be combined with other media such as set-up through facebook or feedback through the idea above of the poster display in SL (although the poster element still has the drawbacks mentioned above). This idea would certainly allow 3D exploration and play and flexibility but again would learners need to be online at the same time and searching together to create a sense of presence? Could individual exploration actually be disaffecting in terms of presence?

British Council already have tasks in questing, mysteries etc

These English language tasks/mysteries involve listening to audio clues and reading text clues around SL on the trail. It sounds exciting and engaging.

Users

The users for my tool would be EFL learners - that is international students who have come to the UK to learn English. Some intend to progress to undergraduate/postgraduate study, some want to improve their language for study reasons in their country, for work or as a hobby.
Most are from Asia from countries such as Japan, Korea and China. The majority chose the UK in order to improve their speaking and listening ability.
Ages vary but most are in their 20's and 30's and are therefore reasonably familiar with digital technology. However, depending on their country of origin, I would not say that they are all digital natives.

Currently they are confident using email and search functions on the internet. They regularly use facebook and other social networking sites. They can upload pictures, download MP3's and engage in text chat online. None have used SecondLife although some do use role-play games on X-box or PS3.

Positives:
They can use facebook so should be comfortable using this as a platform for language work before access SL.
Most are familiar with avatars.
Most enjoy gaming in some form.
Most are motivated to improve their spoken language and want 'chat' time

Constraints:
I think the 'clunky' graphics and movements of SL could put off some ss.
The audio function needs to work well for ss to hear each other clearly.
They need computers, internet access and a headset - which is very difficult to find at the University.
Most prefer to work with a native speaker, not other EFL learners.

If somehow I could combine music or video into the tool I think that would be very motivating. I would definitely like to have some form of word pad where vocab is recorded by the group pre and post discussion - this will hopefully lead to a community of inquiry.

Initial Ideas/ Research

> Similar uses of SL:
1. Virtlantis : English language chat
2. Instituto Espanol : fluency in Spanish language through immersion
3. Virtuoland HQ : chachat! service promotes conversation in English aimed at Japanese ss
4. Cypris Chat : Ss submit written work for marking & f/b from tutors
5. Avatar English : run by Howard Vikers
6. SecondLife English : german based company/ rolepay language
7. EnglishVillage: various set-ups for teaching language
